BCICA welcomes Huurman Mechanical Insulation

Huurman Mechanical Insulation (HMI) officially opened in January, 2024, with a primary focus on the service side of the industry, small projects boilers, chillers, cooling towers, patch repairs, and solar heating.

“We believe in quality over quantity,” says company founder and president, James Huurman. “Ensuring the job is done correctly always takes precedence over completing it quickly.”

HMI is based out of Maple Ridge and covers the area from Whistler to Hope, but Huurman says his small but sturdy team is willing to travel anywhere customers need them.

“In our industry, we primarily cater to smaller companies or handle minor projects for larger firms,” he says. “Our focus is on re-insulation following the replacement of boilers, chillers, or related equipment. Additionally, we provide new insulation for solar heating projects and Fortis upgrades, contributing to the reduction of our carbon footprint.”

HMI is also actively involved with Fraser Health Authority, addressing the repair or replacement of damaged or missing insulation in hospitals and care facilities.

Huurman has been in the mechanical insulation industry for 14 years, and like many others, he came upon the trade almost accidentally.

“I needed a job,” he says, “something more than a paycheck. I had no clue what mechanical insulation was, but I heard if I could stand being itchy it was a great way to make a living and get a Red Seal at the same time.”

To this day, he enjoys the work because it offers new challenges with each mechanical room. “Getting to do arts and crafts all day isn't half bad either!” he adds.

HMI joined the BCICA because he needed membership to secure a contract, but after doing some research into the association and its benefits, he realized that signing up was a commitment to long-term success.

“I discovered that joining would not only provide access to industry standards but also promote accountability for companies and their employees,” Huurman says. “Having observed the subpar work on many sites over the years, this reinforced my decision to become a member.”
